“Make your Bed” and “Eat the Frog” are a couple reminders that Admiral McRaven and Mark Twain famously delivered. Both of these mantras are a challenge to accomplish something everyday. It could start with a little thing like making your bed or something bigger like tackling the hardest task first, like eating a frog, in order to set yourself up for a successful day.
As a freshman, it could be making sure you are getting enough sleep or tackling the toughest part of the homework first. It could be 10 minutes less scrolling and 10 more minutes of creating. Small habits lead to big things. Start simple. Workout every day. Read every day. Create every day. Challenge yourself every day. Those accomplishments, even small, are pounding the rock. When the day comes that the rock finally splits and breaks apart, people may be amazed by your strength. The truth is your accomplishments - like making the team, getting the grade, creating that YouTube channel, teaching yourself photoshop, or getting the part in the show - didn’t just happen. They are the culmination of all the hard work and all the small, consistent wins that are created daily.
The mentality of taking 100% RESPONSIBILITY will help you keep this in perspective. Making excuses won't make things better. Excuses simply justify why we won't try. Don't fall into that trap. What you spend your time on, who you are hanging out with, how you treat others, and how you treat yourself are your responsibility. It is always easier to say we'll do it tomorrow or next week or next month. But if you push through and make your bed, eat the frog or work to earn your Saturday - your future self will thank you!
You have an amazing opportunity. Own it. Seize the day. Take advantage of every opportunity.
Be the BEST. Be YOUR BEST. BE YOU TO THE MAX.
